Scheduling
When and Deadline — and how they fill Today, Upcoming and Someday.
Todebaran keeps scheduling deliberately simple. A task has a when and, separately, a deadline. Together they decide where it shows up.
When (the start date)#
The start date is when you plan to work on something. Set it with ⌘S. A task with a start date of today appears in Today; tomorrow, in Tomorrow; a future date, in Upcoming.
There are quick shortcuts for the common cases:
| Action | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Schedule for today | ⌘⇧T |
| Schedule for tomorrow | ⌘⇧E |
| Move to Someday | ⌘⇧S |
| Clear the date | ⌘⇧R |
Deadline#
The deadline is when something is actually due (⌘E). It's independent of the start date — you might start a report next Monday but have it due on Friday. Overdue deadlines show in red.
A task with only a deadline and no start date still surfaces on the day it's due.
Someday#
Not everything needs a date. Someday (⌘4) is where things wait until you're ready — ideas, maybes, and one-day-perhaps projects. A Someday task is out of your Inbox and out of Today, resting quietly until you schedule it for real.
Natural-language dates#
The date field understands plain English. Type things like:
today,tomorrow,next friday,weekendin 3 days,+3d,a week,next weekend of month,2025 march
Natural language is parsed in the date field, not the task title. Typing a date into a title won't extract it.
Day headings#
Within Today, Tomorrow and the Calendar day view you can group tasks under day headings — sections like Morning, Afternoon and Evening — to shape the flow of a day. Add and rename them right in the view; empty ones can be hidden in Settings → Tasks.
The dated views#
| View | Shows |
|---|---|
| Today (⌘1) | Tasks scheduled today, plus deadline-only tasks due today — and an Overdue section for anything you missed. |
| Tomorrow (⌘3) | Tasks scheduled for tomorrow. |
| Upcoming (⌘5) | Everything ahead, laid out day by day and then month by month, with overdue items called out at the top. |
| Someday (⌘4) | Tasks parked without a date. |
| Inbox (⌘2) | Unscheduled, unfiled tasks. |
Your Today view can also carry countdowns to dates that matter and a daily note for the day.
Want a view that gathers, say, everything due this week across every project? That's what smart lists are for.
